WHAT IS TMJ?
Understanding TMJ
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) encompasses problems affecting the jaw muscles, the temporomandibular joint itself, and the surrounding areas. This joint connects the jawbone to the skull, functioning like a hinge that enables you to open and close your mouth, as well as move your jaw side to side. TMJ disorders can cause significant pain and may impair jaw function, making it difficult to open your mouth, chew, or move your jaw comfortably.
What are the symptoms of TMJ disorder?
Common symptoms of TMJ disorders include:
- Pain in the sides of the face, jaw joint area, neck, shoulders
- Discomfort in and around the ear
- Popping, clicking, or grating sounds when opening or closing the jaw
- A feeling of tiredness in the face
- Discomfort or difficulty while chewing
- Swelling of the face
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Toothaches
- Neck pain
Our TMJ Treatments
TMJ Laser Therapy
TMJ laser therapy can be used to ease discomfort, pain, inflammation, and swelling of the jaw and surrounding muscles using a process called “photobiomodulation”.
Botox Injections for TMJ
BOTOX® is used to treat Facial and TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) and associated jaw tension and pain. When injected into specific facial muscles affected with soreness and discomfort, BOTOX® relieves TMJ and jaw tension for many patients. The injections often eliminate headaches resulting from teeth grinding, and in cases of severe stress, BOTOX® can even minimize lockjaw.
